"Delicious food! I tried the mustard chicken and the peperonata arancini—both were outstanding. If you have a sweet tooth, don't miss their cakes; I had the best carrot cake here, hands down."
A coffee shop dream that grew a bakehouse
Metro began in 2009 with Theo's dream of owning his own coffee shop — and Toni, who left a thirty-year teaching career to help him chase it. What began as a coffee and sandwich shop on Commercial Street East has now evolved into a bakehouse and a two-site café and bar, with a licensed bar, function room and a mural-covered back courtyard.
"Our journey began with Theo's dream of owning his own coffee shop back in 2009. Reluctantly, I left a thirty year teaching career to help Theo realise his dream… Our promise is to offer our customers the same hospitality that we would offer our family and friends."
The name says it: Metro comes from the Greek word Metrio — "in the middle", a meeting place. With Toni's Sicilian heritage and Theo's Greek roots in the kitchen, a French-trained pastry chef who knocked on the door and started the bakery, and sugo made the family way once a year, Metro has become the meeting place it was named for.
