"It has a huge Pie selection of course, and a vanilla slice that might kill you, but every bite will be worth it."
Bill & Lyn's labour of love
Bill and Lyn Rose have run the Old Fernvale Bakery for over 30 years — a labour of love on the Brisbane Valley Highway, living out at Wivenhoe Pocket with their Charolais cattle. The bakers start at 2 or 3 in the morning, and they don't stop: pies, bread, pastries and cakes, fresh each day.
Fernvale is where the first leg of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail — the longest rail trail in Australia — comes to rest, and this bakery is the first food stop you'll find on the trail. It feeds hungry cyclists, runners, walkers and horse riders, car clubs on a Sunday run, and day-trippers stocking up on picnic supplies on the way to Wivenhoe Dam.
"When we make a new pie, everybody tries it… if anybody rejects it you've got to go away and lick your wounds and start again."— Bill Rose, on the bakery's taste-test rule
Next door, the café is decked floor to ceiling in Australian rural memorabilia personally collected and shared by local families — some pieces dating back to the 1800s — with a verandah, courtyard gardens and a new undercover patio. The park directly opposite is made for a pie picnic.
