"I have travelled the world and know that when there is 50+ people lined up outside of an eatery they must be doing something right... the Port Elliot Bakery is the real deal! My 17 year old son... boldly stated that this is the best meat pie he has ever eaten!"
A bakery on this corner for over 160 years
There's been a bakery at 31 North Terrace since the 1860s — the first bakers here were the Beebe family, and the original wood-fired oven still stands in the store today, in the historic main street of Port Elliot, just up from Horseshoe Bay.
In 1989, the Gorman-Horrocks family established the bakery as it is now — and the original owners are still running it. Four children and twelve grandchildren later, the family jokes that they may yet beat the Beebes' 60-year record.
"Our success is due to using fresh produce daily, baked exclusively on these premises in Port Elliot."
Today the queues tell the story — Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism calls the bakery "somewhat of an icon in our wondrous state", and regulars drive from Adelaide and beyond for a pie, a vanilla slice, and whatever this month's donut happens to be.
