Our Story
A grand old Sturt Street residence, restored for coffee
The Turret Cafe sits inside a beautifully restored 1890s residence at 802 Sturt Street — a heritage-registered Ballarat address, reborn as one of the city's best-loved cafés. It's the kind of room guests describe the moment they walk in: lovely decor, a welcoming hum, and staff who can't do enough to help.
At its heart is the Turret Bakehouse, our in-house artisan bakery — signature sourdough loaves, pastries, and a daily bakery pie with a serious local following. Every cake, slice and sweet treat on the counter is baked in-house, and the kitchen leans on local Ballarat produce, from Sunnybank Farm eggs to Salt Kitchen smallgoods.
Fully licensed, with local Ballarat wines by the glass alongside our house-roast coffee, The Turret is what one guest called "a little gem" — and what the judges called the Best Licensed Café in Victoria.
